NOVEMBER

Novemember 28th - We are competing at the Toronto Tournament of Maial Arts Champions at the Hershey centre in Mississauga.
Registration Forms are available for the Winter 2010 session of training at both Bolton & Mississauga locations.

DECEMBER

December 10th - We have our Fall session gradings for our students at our Mississauga location.
Decemeber 11th - We have our Fall session gradings for our students at our Bolton location.
December 12th - To celebrate the season, we will end our winter session of classes with our annual Potluck Christmas Party.

NMAC Tournament ...Results

Hi Folks,

Quick Update...FAADIN AHAMAD competed in the NMAC tournament on November 29th and placed as follows:

2nd Hand Forms - Drunken Boxing
2nd Weapons - Spear

There was a little confusion around how many weapons divisions there were, so Faadin just competed in long weapons. Great job!!

Kungfu Hand Forms...

One of the most important aspects of Kungfu is forms training. Forms (Kata) are sequence of techniques that have been preserved over time. These forms are taught from Teacher to students once the student shown dedication and "Wu De" (strong moral character) to their teacher and fellow students. The hand forms listed below make up the core of the curriculum at our school:

Phoenix Martial Arts Tournament Results...

Hello everyone,

Can-Tai Kungfu competed at the Phoenix Martial Arts Invitational tournament this past weekend. Although most of the students competing were from the Bolton club. Mahmoud Rihawi from the Mississauga participated as well. He has been on a 2 year leave from training. The following were the final results:

CIKWF Tourny Results...GREAT!

Hi Everyone,

Well everyone did a fantastic job at the tournament this past Saturday. Although the tournament was fairy small (113 competitors), our competitors performed in divisions that had decent numbers. I (Sifu) had to do alot of judging (childrens divisions) but I was fortunately enough see most of my students forms and sparring matches. We came home with 6 Golds, 5 Silvers!!! I will "try" to list the results as best as my memory can recollect:

This is the last week of Session III (Summer). August 23rd (saturday-mississauga) will mark the last day. The will be no formal classes until September 15th (so don't come cause we're on vacation :))

Baltimore Tournament...July 25-26

Hi everyone,

Well the Baltimore tournament was last weekend and it was a great tournament. The level of organization, hospitality, and friendship towards the Canadian competitors was wonderful. This tournament is one we will be organizing for next year. Sifu Faadin went down to compete and received the following:

2nd Place (Silver medal) - Mens Advanced Short Weapon (Straight Sword)
5th Place - Mens Advanced Hand Form (Snake Form)

The level of competition was high and dispite Sifu Faadin's injuries, he did extremely well. Please join me in congratulating him in his achievements!!!

Coming Fall 2008 - Can-Tai Demo/Competition Team

Hello everyone!

Coming the Fall session, the Sifus from both locations (and myself) will be organizing our 1st formal Demo/Competition Team for the Can-Tai Schools (Mississauga & Bolton).

The team will be comprised of 3 groups:

Demo/Competition Team - Performers
Lion Dance Team - performers
Volunteers

Demo/Competition Team

These individuals will be involved in going to tournaments and performing demonstrations, practice schedules

Lion Dance Team - performers

Individuals of this group will be involved in Lion Dance training, music, cleaning and maintenance/repair of the all LD equipment, performances and practice schedules

Volunteers

All parents, brothers, sisters, friends ANYONE who would like to help out with the sucess of the Demo Team would be greatly appreciated. Tasks such as transportation, equipment maintenance, pre-registration of tournaments, fundraising (through social activities), computer related activities, music recording etc.

The individuals involved must be:

Committed to practice times
Energetic and ready to train hard
Ready to bring suggestions to the table on how we can make our team great!

Practices will begin the last week of August and 1st week of September for club open houses and the fall tournament curcuits. I encourage all students to get involved in any way you can.

Note: Attention all people interested in DEMO/COMPETITION group, there will be an additional cost for the COMPETITION UNIFORM as it will be different from our regular class uniform (fancier :)). Also there will be a informal audition to determine where the Team Leaders can best use your skills. Don't let this scare ya, its just to see whether additional resources/training is required.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Group Team Leaders will be assigned August 7th

Auditions will be August 13th 8:00pm (Bolton) and 14th (Mississauga) 8:00pm

Last Night Class...

Last night we talked a little about challenging yourself during class. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to training. Your maybe stretching, horse stances, pushups whatever. Remember martial arts is about personal development and enlightenment. Always be pushing yourself past your limits. But you also have to know what those limits are as well. Training consistently is very important. What everyone else in the class is doing is irrelevant. What you are doing is everything. Listen to what your body is telling you. Exercises that are easy for you draw confidence from that. Exercises that are more difficult, use them to help discipline yourself. It always pays off when you focus on what you get from all the pain and hard work in class.

Kungfu Panda was a sucess!!!!

Well last night was our Kungfu Panda Movie Night with Phoenix Martial Arts. The whole night went off without a hitch. Despite the screw up in time (6:30 instead of 5:30) everyone seem to have a great time! Our group took up the 100 out of 150 chairs in the theatre!!! Now I know for sure we will need a private viewing the next time we go. I would like to thank everyone who joined us to make the night a sucess.

Crispin Super Shiai....Great Experience

Hello Everyone,

Well, we attended the 2008 Crispin Super Shiai this past weekend. And I have to say the entire tournament was handled in a very proffessional manner. It began with myself not pre-registering our students, but Sensei Crispin was extremely accomedating. I know what its like having to register people the day of a tournament, so the staff there helped us out to get ourselves out to the competition area as fast as possible. The registration was "buffet style" meaning you pay $35.00 and you can join as many events as you like. Also, the instructors who judged entered were allowed to compete for free!!! Great insentive to bring out talented instructors you never get to see since they are usually judging!
The day went very well as Can-Tai entered approx. 15 competitors (16 including me - I entered at the last minute:)), bringing home many place standings. I will post them when I get them all this week. The competition from all the schools was very high quality, demonstrating everything from hand and weapon forms, to dramatic self-defense routines. Being our first time at this tournament we were treated with respect from all the other schools (Kungfu and Karate alike). I would definitely go back again.
For all those competitors who attended, I want to personally congratulate you on your achievements. Keep up the great effort!

Sifu and Shifu whats the difference?

I have had many people (not just students) ask me what is the difference between a "Sifu" (pronounced 'See' fu) and Shifu (pronounced 'Sure' fu). Sifu is the Cantonese pronounciation and Shifu is the Mandarin Dialect of saying martial arts (kungfu) instructor, head instructor, master etc.

Open Tournaments then and now.....

Our school will be off to our first "Open" martial arts tournament in years. I think that open tournament will be an excellent opportunity for our students to test their skill against other styles. When I was younger, the option to participate in "Kungfu Only" tournaments were EXTREMELY rare, so Open tournaments were our only option. In past years, knowledge was kept closed to the styles and many groups had very limited knowledge about kungfu. Now a days, knowledge about all styles, has improved 10 fold with the help of the internet, movies, and semi professional fighting curcuits.
So, instructors are less interested in flashy forms, and now are looking for fighting principles such as strength, speed, flexibility, endurance and are weighing more respect on the student's ability the defend themselves in the ring. Especially, at open tournaments since the knowledge of form/kata is fairly limited (but much better than before). At our school, we still pride ourselves on the beauty of hong quan hand and weapons forms, but application and fighting skill is important as well.
The Crispin Super Shiai has a good reputation for being fair, so our school will give it a try. As long as our students have a good time that will be the ultimate test as to how open tournaments stack up today.

Chinese in Class Part I...

In class the chinese language plays a very big part in establishing both a cultural connection to Kungfu's roots, as well as broadening our students minds. Well lets review some basic terms then I will post more vocabulary in future posts.

Numbers

1 - yi (pronouced "eee")
2 - ar ( say the letter "r")
3 - san (as it sounds)
4 - si (pronouced "sil")
5 - wo (pronounced "ooo")
6 - leo (prnounced "leeo"
7 - chi (pronounced "chee")
8 - ba (as it sounds)
9 - jio (pronouced "jeo")
10 - shr (pronounced like "sure")

Try to practice these numbers in class. Blue Sash and higher are required to know how to count as part of their testing requirement.

Just some Upcoming events offered by the Canadian International Kuoshu Wushu Federation:

Sunday, June 1st, 2008: National Certified San Shou Judge Course. This training will last the full day, with testing completed at the end of the training. Contact Sifu Steve for fees and enrollment details.

Saturday, June 28th, 2008: 1st Canadian National San Shou Championship in London, Ontario. Further details regarding this event will be announced very soon.

Sunday, July 13th, 2008: The 3rd World Traditional Wushu Team Trials Championship. The 3rd World Traditional Wushu Championship will commence on October 28th, 2008 in Wudan, China.

Hey Everyone,

Well I am back from my vacation, all bright eyed and bushy tailed; ready to run some serious classes (to work off all the food I ate). First class of session II will start tonight for Bolton and tomorrow night for Mississauga. PLEASE be sure to pay your session II fees this week if you have not already done so. Also be sure to pay any outstanding grading fees if you have not done so. All tuition fees MUST be paid by April 11th or students will not be allowed to participate.

JUST A NOTE REGARDING STUDENTS WHO DID NOT ATTEND SESSION I GRADING:

We will arranging a makeup exam on Saturday April 12th, 2007

Sash Testing for session I.....

Sash testing for both Mississauga and Bolton students will take place on Saturday March 29th starting at 1:00pm. For those students being graded, please make appropriate arrangements to arrive at the Bolton location by 12:30pm to warm up. All Instructors are required to attend to assist in the examination due to the very large group of candidates.

Note: For students who do not attend this grading, the next chance for testing will be the end of session II! We will no longer be performing testing during class time as it interrupts our class schedule. Make your best effort to attend the assigned examination times or you will wait until the next date.

Hey folks,

Quick update. We are in week 11 of session 1. Be sure to register for session 2. We will have all the appropriate paperwork available by March 24th. CT Bolton will have specialty training and private instruction on Saturdays (tent 10-12am) in the new session as well as Tai chi is being moved to Fridays nights (7:30-9:00). CT Mississauga wil be the same schedule, but if you looking for private instruction there, please arrange with Sifu Salim.

Some thoughts on Training...

One of things that I found to be extremely useful when it comes to training keeping a log of your activities. Kinda like what weightlifters use. You decide on a set number of repititions (with the help of your sifu of course!) for each technique you are working on for your level and document it. It helps you see progress much easier and it helps you be consistent. Consistency is the key to mastery!

Yes its me a guy who never emails, facebook relies, chats, etc. I thought I would give this blogging thing a try! I would love to give students an opportunity to ask specific questions about their training, lineage, forms, etc. Also I will try to use this page to inform ALL students about upcoming tournaments, seminars and events which might be of interest. I am going to try and post one article per month on diiferent aspects of Can-Tai Training and tradition.
